Lilliput Lane Winter Wonderland |
|
Situated on the banks of the Thames between Abingdon and Dorchester, the pretty village of Clifton Hampden has attracted the attention of more than its fair share of literary admirers over the years. Charles Dickens wrote 'this picturesque little village is situated at the foot of a bold bluff, which rises abruptly from the somewhat flat counntry around. The cliff is surmounted by the church and vicarage, and is clothed with luxuriant trees down to the water's edge. The village , a pretty collection of old-fashioned cottages, all of which are bright with flowers...' Jerome K Jerome described his characters staying here in his book Three Men in a Boat: 'Round Clifton Hampden, itself a wonderfully pretty village, old-fashioned, peaceful, and dainty with flowers, the river scenery is rich and beautiful.. If you stay the night on land at Clifton, you cannot do better than put up at the 'Barley Mow'. Lilliput Lane's senior sculptor, John Ball, has taken inspiration from the many timber-framed and thatched cottages dating from the sixteenth and seventeenth century and created a wonderfully nostalgic village scene, complete with a festive covering of snow and a horse-drawn sleigh that actually moves around its very own circular route when you wind up the key. |
